The Odeleite River known as the Blue Dragon River— located in Southern Portugal’s Algarve region — recently became known as one of the world’s natural wonders for its uncanny resemblance to the Chinese blue dragon.
In 2015, photographer Steve Richards snapped an aerial shot of the river, which miraculously revealed the exact same shape of a dragon complete with head, neck, back, and tail.
Consequently nicknamed the Blue Dragon River, the river is now considered a symbol of good fortune, strength, and prosperity — just as the Chinese dragon is. If you plan to visit the Odeleite River, it’s the perfect spot for family-friendly outdoor activities like SUP and kayaking, while hiking trails are also available.
The Blue Dragon River: A symbol of good fortune
In Chinese mythology, the blue dragon is a sacred symbol that represents power, prosperity, and good fortune. In fact, that’s why China (and anywhere with high Chinese populations) typically has a baby boom in the Year of the Dragon (which occurs once every twelve years). Parents believe if their babies are born during this year, they’ll be blessed with lifelong good luck. The dragon was also adopted by Chinese imperial families in ancient times as a symbol of strength (which explains why the imperial seat, for example, was dubbed “the Dragon Throne”). Similarly, dragons are also associated with strength and heraldry in Spanish mythology and history. King Peter IV of Aragon, in particular, wore a helmet engraved with a dragon in order to reinforce his role as king of Aragon. This was a pun on the similarity between “dragon” and “Aragon”.
Algarve’s lucrative agricultural production
Blue dragons are also said to herald the start of the spring season, new life, and plant growth — which is particularly relevant to the Odeleite River. In addition to its status as a tourist attraction, the Blue Dragon River is also vital for local agricultural production. The Algarve region is famous for its fresh fruit and vegetables, and particularly for its citrus groves. In fact, around 250,000 and 350,000 tonnes of citrus fruit are produced in Algarve every year, and this also accounts for 70% of the country’s citrus sector. Much of Algarve’s crops benefit from the irrigation provided by the Blue Dragon River. Plus, Algarve’s agricultural production also provides the country with a valuable economic boost. In fact, gross agricultural product has increased by 5.4% in volume and 7.4% in value per year over the last ten years.
Fun ways to explore the Blue Dragon River
If you want to explore the Odeleite River, there’s no shortage of fun things to do, and this is particularly true for families. In fact, over 80% of parents intend to travel with their kids this year. 84% say family vacations make their children more open to new experiences, whereas 62% say it helps their kids develop a more positive mindset. So, whether you want to strengthen family bonds or simply treat everyone to a nice break, a well-planned family vacation in Algarve is a great way to share fun new experiences and make memories together.
If your family enjoys outdoor adventures, for example, you can take a standup paddle board (SUP) tour on the Odeleite River. Guided by professionals, SUP is very easy to learn, and these tours are suitable for beginners and experienced users alike. Along the way, you can even stop and explore various hidden beaches and caves. Kayaking is another fun family-friendly option. Kayak tours of the Odeleite Dam and Pernadas Mill (which are also on the river) are available from providers based in Odeleite village. This is a peaceful way to explore the river and admire the gorgeous views of the surrounding hills.
Hiking in Peneda-Gerês National Park
Alternatively, you can take an easy walk on one of the many hiking trails located within Peneda-Gerês National Park, which is also home to the Blue Dragon River. The Don Quixote trail, for instance, ascends the scenic hills of Cerro do Bicudo, and rewards you with panoramic river views. It’s a circular trail that takes roughly six hours to complete.
Portugal’s beautiful Blue Dragon River is one of the world’s natural wonders. The perfect spot for watersports, hiking, and general relaxation, a vacation here is bound to be one to remember.
